NAPO "Nigeria Association of Prosthetists and Orthotists" is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) a professional body with interest in development and growth of prosthetics and orthotics industry in Nigeria while working in collaboration with Government, private agencies and licensing bodies to promote Prosthetics and Orthotics professionals and training within the country. NAPO was first inaugurated in the 1980's by executive members comprising of Nigeria's foremost Prosthetists and Orthotists trained overseas in the persons of Alhaji Sulemaru (retired HOD, PO, Dala Kano), Late Mr. E.O. Somolu, Mr. S.A. Opatade, Mrs. J.B. Aluko, likewise Mr. Isaac Akomolafe and Dr Gbolahan Ayodele Sasona were outside Nigeria for years before they came back to contribute they are the peers of founding executives of NAPO, to mention but a few, whose effort have immensely contributed to the provision and inclusion for Prosthetics and Orthotics in the scheme of service of the federal republic of Nigeria among other notable achievements. These legendry group of NAPO executives were also instrumental to the World Health Organization (WHO) P/O certificate training program situated at the NOH, Igbobi-Lagos in the 1980's and later came to a halt. These key founding members of NAPO in collaboration with educational and government agencies such as National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) played a Vital role in the government/NBTE approval (year 2007) and commencement in year 2008 of PO Technology training program at ND "National Diploma" level domicile at NOH,Igbobi-Lagos, the first of its kind in Nigeria, (Federal College of Orthopaedic Technology, Igbobi-Lagos -FECOT) which later progressed to commencement of P/O HND training program in year 2014, boasting of an average of 42 HND graduates most of whom have served in the Nigeria Youth Service Corp, and no less 165 ND graduates. Aging, retirement, and purification of the founding executive members as well as death of Senior citizens who are PO professional in Nigeria had its toll on NAPO. The almost dysfunctional NAPO association was revitalized in year 2018 with the conduction of executive elections and the installation of new NAPO executives who are a crop of young vibrant PO graduates from Federal College of Orthopaedic Technology (FECOT).All necessary legalities concerning the association were put in place and now having a more modern outlook. It is noteworthy that the President of the newly revitalized NAPO in the person of late Mr. Oladokun Olaniyi on oversight function was part of the delegate of the Medical Rehabilitation Therapists Board ( MRTB). that went for resource inspection of the B.Sc PO training program at FUTO in late year 2018, which led to the pre accreditation MRTB has award the B.Sc PO training program at Federal University of Technology Oweri (FUTO) at the moment. NAPO has the interest of harmonizing all Prosthetists and Orthotists in Nigeria for the single goal of the growth and development of this noble profession in Nigeria regardless of the different institutions of learning in Nigeria from which Prosthetists and Orthotists could have graduated from. Mission: Collaboration with all boards, bodies and relevant government and non-government agencies and policy making organs of government key to the growth of research, education, training and practice of Prosthetist&Orthotist in Nigeria to elevate Prosthetics&Orthotics profession to make a greater impact on humanity both nationally and internationally.
